DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCE

Three-Year Doctoral Program in Ancient Philosophy and History of Ancient
Science.

The Graduate School of Ancient Philosophy (http://www.ancient-philosophy.de)
at the Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin (http://www.hu-berlin.de) is pleased
to offer up to four fellowships for doctoral study in Ancient Philosophy and
Science

The fellowships cover living expenses for three years and are for full-time
study only. (There are no tuition fees.)

The Graduate School of Ancient
Philosophy provides a structured doctoral program in ancient philosophy and
science (in English and German). The three-year program leads to the
doctoral degree in Philosophy or Classics. It includes taught courses,
reading groups, tutorial supervision, international workshops, and intensive
short courses and seminars. The program culminates in the writing of a
doctoral dissertation (in English or German).

The School has a teaching staff of several full professors as well as many
additional faculty and an advisory board consisting of internationally
renowned experts from Europe and America.

The international Ancient Philosophy & Science Network (APSN) Students of
the program are automatically part of the international Ancient Philosophy &
Science Network (APSN) initiated by the Graduate School. The APSN involves
collaboration with four international partner institutions in the field of
ancient philosophy and science:

– University of Chicago (Philosophy and Classics)
– University of Leuven (Philosophy, De Wulf-Mansion Centre, Aristoteles
Latinus)
– Princeton University (Philosophy and Classics)
– University of Toronto (Philosophy and Classics, joint program in Ancient
and Medieval Philosophy)

Each candidate will have one supervisor in Berlin and one external advisor
and will spend up to one year at one of the partner institutions. Thus every
PhD student at the GSAP will become a member of a vibrant international
community of excellent PhD students and scholars. For more information see

The closing date for applications for the fellowships is 15 February.

The doctoral fellowships advertised here have no thematic restrictions but
two of the fellowships will be on offer for candidates with research
interests in the interface between philosophy and science in the ancient
world (under the supervision of Prof. van der Eijk, who is responsible for
the project “Medicine of the Mind, Philosophy of the Body”), e.g.
Aristotelian biology, the philosophical aspects of ancient medicine (e.g.
Galen), or the medical and biological interests of ancient philosophical
writers.

Several other leading scholars, including Prof. Gerd Grasshoff (Philosophy)
and Prof. Markus Asper (Classics), are part of the vibrant ancient
philosophy community at the Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin.

Applicants submit

– a research proposal of up to 800 words, followed by a bibliography and a
timetable,
– a writing sample,
– a personal statement,
– transcripts,
– CV, and
– two letters of recommendation.

Interviews will be held at Berlin during the third week of March 2011.
Candidates from overseas will not need to travel to Berlin for an interview.
