Akademia.

Despite their importance, the exact location and facilities of the Platonic philosophical school in Athens remain unclear.

The architectural remains found during the last century’s excavations were the subject of several enthusiastic hypotheses. The school has been thought to be on various locations: the Akademy area, the Ptolemaion gymnasium, or the “house of Proclus”. The topic has discussed in several works on Athenian topography (Wachsmuth 1894; Judeich 1931; Wycherley 1962; Travlos 1971) and gymnasia (Delorme 1960; Wacker 1996), but an investigation based on both historical and archaeological data has never been previously undertaken. Attention has mostly been paid to the earliest and latest phases, while the centuries 1st – 4th AD were always neglected. For this period sources do no attest a school; they only show philosophers teaching in their homes. At the same time, Platonism becomes a subject of study in the so-called Marcus Aurelius’s University.

By collecting literary sources, inscriptions, architectural remains and sculptures related to Platonic philosophers, this study aims to reconstruct the architectural and topographic context of Platonic philosophy in Athens along a large chronological range, from Plato till Proclus. The work presents a critical all-round examination of the architectural evidence and provides new elements and interpretations.
