Description
Who are we? What is our place in the world? These old questions have new urgency in today’s globalised world. This workshop focuses on ancient Stoic theories about self-knowledge, personal identity and cosmopolitanism. Its aim is to reconstruct conceptions and arguments developed in cultures rather different from our own. In doing so the workshop will hopefully provide anyone interested in these questions from a contemporary point of view with richer and more refined conceptual instruments.
Programme
- 10.00-11.00 René Brouwer (Utrecht University): Cynic Origins
- 11.00-12.00 Eric Brown (Washington University in St. Louis): The Early Stoics
- 13.30-14.30 John Sellars (Royal Holloway, University of London): Cicero
- 15.00-16.00 Albert Joosse (Utrecht University): Epictetus
