Call for papers : The Eleventh Annual Cambridge Graduate Conference in Ancient Philosophy ‘Perspectives on Agency and Philosophy of Mind in Ancient Philosophy’

The Eleventh Annual Cambridge Graduate Conference in Ancient Philosophy
‘Perspectives on Agency and Philosophy of Mind in Ancient Philosophy’

March 18th-19h 2022

We are pleased to announce our call for papers for our interdisciplinary conference ‘Perspectives on Agency and Philosophy of Mind in Ancient Philosophy,’ to take place in the Faculty of Classics at the University of Cambridge. It has increasingly become clear that Greek and Roman philosophy has made an important contribution to the study of motivation, intentionality, desire, and agency in philosophy. This conference will explore the linkages between these concepts and the ways in which ancient thinkers were able to offer systemic accounts of theory of action. It will also welcome contemporary and other approaches inspired by ancient thought. We invite graduate students and early-career researchers (within three years of completion of their degree) from a variety of disciplines in the humanities—philosophy, literature, theology, political theory, reception studies—to submit philosophically-oriented papers on the subjects mentioned. The conference will take place in a hybrid format with presentations in the Faculty of Classics, Cambridge and via Zoom.

We are also pleased to announce that our keynotes speakers will be Prof. Ursula Coope (Oxford) and Dr. Fiona Leigh (UCL).

Your paper should be approximately 3000-3500 words (and be accompanied by a 30-minute presentation), although it need not be in its final form at the time of submission. We ask for both a PDF and a Word document, prepared for blind review. Please submit the paper, along with an abstract of no more than 300 words, to cambridgegraduateconference@yahoo.com. Please write ‘Conference Submission’ in the subject line of your email and include in the body of the email your name, departmental affiliation, email address, and the title of your paper (as well as the year in which your PhD was awarded in the case of early-career researchers).

Please note that the submission deadline is Monday, 10 January 2022. Successful applicants will be notified by Friday, 21 January 2022.

We kindly request that successful applicants send the final version of their paper (as well as any related handouts or other materials) to their respondent three weeks prior to actual presentation.

Looking forward to your submissions,
The 2022 CGCAP Organising Committee
